    Lou Reed and Tai Chi

    The late Lou Reed was mostly known as musician, however, one of his passions in life was practicing Tai Chi Chuan. Lou Reed was famous as the principal songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist for the band The Velvet Underground and later for wonderful work in his solo musical career.

    Lou Reed started his journey in Tai Chi during the 1980’s. He first studied Eagle Claw Kung Fu with master Leung Shum. He was introduced to the Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan at this school, and studied it for 15 years. Later, Lou Reed met Ren Guangyi, and began learning the Traditional Chen style of Tai Chi Chuan with him for more than 10 years.

    Lou Reed was very active in promoting the art of Tai Chi Chuan, whether it was featuring his teacher, Ren Guangyi, performing Tai Chi on stage during a concert, or assisting in teaching the art to fellow enthusiasts.

    Unfortunately, Lou Reed passed away in October of 2013.  It was a great loss for the both the world of music and Tai Chi Chuan. He will truly be remembered for his great contributions to both arts.

  • Master Wei Lun Huang Passes Away

    Master Wei Lun Huang Passes Away

    Master Wei Lun Huang passed away at 11:25am on July 24, 2016. He was admitted to hospital on July 4th for a perforated colon. Unfortunately, it is reported that infection from the perforated colon spread leading to a kidney failure. Wei Lun Huang fell into a coma and never recovered.

    Master Wei Lun Huang was well known and respected in the Tai Chi world. He started learning Chinese Internal Martial Arts when he was a child. Master Huang taught Yang style Tai Chi, Hsing Yi, Ba Gua, Liu He Ba Fa, and Chi Kung for over 35 years.

    Tai Chi Master Y.C. Chiang Passes Away

    Grandmaster Yun Chung Chiang (1922 – 2016) passed away this last week. Y.C. Chiang was well known as a grandmaster of the Guang Ping style of Tai Chi Chuan. At the age of 28 he started training with the famous Guang Ping master Kuo Lien-Ying, where he learned the Gauang Ping style of Tai Chi Chuan, Hsingi, Bagua, and Shaolin Kung Fu.

    Y.C. Chiang founded the Wen Wu School in Berkley, California in 1973. It was at this school that Chiang taught Chinese Martial Arts, Qigong, philosophy, and art. Y.C. Chiang was also a Doctor of Chinese Medicine, and operated a clinic out of the school.

  • World Tai Chi Day In Greenville

    World Tai Chi Day In Greenville

    Once again film maker Valdas Kotovas has produced another beautiful film capturing the events and people celebrating World Tai Chi and Qigong Day in Greenville, South Carolina on April 30th, 2016. The activities were held at the scenic Reedy River Falls Park. Communities like Greensville organize their local World Tai Chi and Qigong Day events to take place on the last Saturday of April at 10:00am local time around the globe.

    The 2016 World Tai Chi Day in Greenville included participants from various local schools of Tai Chi. Some of the schools which attended this this year, and are seen in the video, include Jimmy Dong and his Greenville Chen Style Tai Chi School; members of the Greensville Chinese Association; and George Gantt of the Equilibrium Zen Gym which teaches Yang 24, sword, and fan.

    Valdas Kotovas filmed most of the shots using a BM micro cinema camera in Raw , and shots with a Gimbal using a Sony A7s. You can view some of his other wonderful films on his YouTube Channel. Music for the video is by the Desert Dwellers.

    The latest documentary by Empty Mind Films looks at the Wudang schools of Tai Chi Chuan. Once again, as with all of the Empty Mind Films productions, it is beautifully filmed and in quality HD format. The film features Taoist master Zhong Yun Long and other schools of the Wudang style of Tai Chi Chuan.

    World Tai Chi And Qigong Day 2016

    All across the globe at 10:00 am local time on April 30th, of people from more than 80 countries will celebrate the practice Tai Chi and Qigong.

    They will gather in small and large groups, and from large cities to small towns. The celebrations will first begin in Fiji, at 10:00 am their local time. From there, the event will move west through countries such as Australia, Japan, China, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, North and South America, and will finally end at 10:00 am local time in the Hawaiian Islands 22 hours later.

    The World Tai Chi and Qigong Day event first started in 1999, when Bill Douglas organized an event to celebrate the healing benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong. He organized a group of about 200 participants to demonstrate the arts on the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, in the United States.

    Events celebrating the World Tai Chi and Qiqong Day are usually organized by local groups and schools of Tai Chi or Qiqong. To join an existing World Tai Chi and Qiqong Day event, you can visit the official World Tai Chi and Qigong Day website to find more information on where the local events may be held.

    Andy Samberg Doing Tai Chi In Hot Rod Movie

    In the 2007 movie “Hot Rod”, Andy Samberg and his co-star Isla Fisher perform a scene in which they are practising Tai Chi on the shore of a beautiful lake. In this video clip from the movie the character Denise (played by Isla Fisher) shows Rod Kimble (played by Andy Samberg) an advanced Tai Chi move!

    The Slow Motion Tai Chi Of Daniel Medvedov

    Daniel Medvedov practices and teaches what is known as the 384 Tai Chi Sequence of Yao style of Traditional Book Of Changes I Ching system. Daniel Medvedov is known as a Zen Master internationally by his students, as he practices the Chinese branch of Zen, which he was authorized to teach by Master Nan Huai Chin, and Grandmaster Liu Yuen Chiao.

    50,000 Students Of Tai Chi Set World Record

    50,000 students of Tai Chi Chuan gathered in Jiaozuo, a city in the Henan province of China to set a world record. On the morning of Sunday October 18, 2015, students lined up in long rows upon rows and began their synchronized movements of slow gentle movements at 15 different locations throughout the city.

    The successful attempt was to break the Guinness World Record of the largest martial arts display ever.
